Q1. Where are you from?
Victoria, BC
Q2. How did you discover copywriting?
How did I get into copywriting? Gather round and bear witness to this most unusual tale… Many moons ago I became the marketing director of a local area rug cleaning company. Granted that sounds about as exciting as sucking on a dirty wet dish rag… But opportunities are hidden everywhere if you know how to find them. And I found one. A big one. One that was scribbled something on the back of an envelope by the company owner. It was a machine he was thinking of getting built for himself so he could take the dirt out of rugs before washing them (Dirt + water = mud. No dirt + water= no mud. Much easier and faster to clean – genius right?) Now zip forward 23 months later and rather than that ingenious device squirreled away in his shop, I used it to create the #1 most recognizable brand in the area rug cleaning industry: RugBadger.com. Built the website. Filled it with glorious content. Hit #1 on google search engine results. Then sold millions of dollars of equipment using nothing more than personality rich & highly entertaining daily email. Email marketing was a skill I had to learn fast and furious. Kind of like learning to swim when you get tossed into South American river with a few ravenous Piranhas to help motivate you – know what I mean? Loved every minute of it.
Q3. What forms of copy do you write?
Email, Advertorials & copy with shorts…er…I mean short copy
Q4. What are your favorite niches to write in?
B2B, Ecomm, Health
Q5. What is the #1 lesson you've learned as a copywriter?
Consistent, frequent & personality-rich communication turns any customer list into a powerfully profitable asset.
Q6. Who is your favorite copywriter & why?
What just one? That’s like asking me which kid of mine is my favorite. I can’t do it (well, ok… today it’s middle one, but yesterday it was the young one – so it changes). Anyhow when it comes to my favorite copywriters, it’s a lot less fluid just a bit more numerous… Matt Furey for introducing me to the profit power daily email Ben Settle (influenced by Matt Furey) who taught me how to write in an info-taining way Laura Belgray for teaching me personality-rich emails are addictive Justin Blackman for letting me know it’s possible to write in any voice
Q7. Do you have any recent wins to share?
If email can sell millions of dollars of area rug cleaning equipment – imagine what it can do for your business (filed under things that make you go hmmmm… am I right?)
Q8. What would you say to a prospective client who wants to hire you?
Your customer list is your most valuable asset. And when you blend the Potent Power of Email with Charismatic Content and a Wee Bit of Humor (aka my “Mesmerizing Formula”)… Your customers will enjoy their relationship with you so much they’ll love buying from you again & again. It’s all about the relationship with your list, baby. The stronger you make it, the more profitable it becomes. And it just so happens that building relationships with email is what I do (along with some other stuff – just ask).
Q9. What is a good email address for prospective clients to contact you?
