Q1. Where are you from?

I’m from Imo state, Nigeria

Q2. How did you discover copywriting?

First things first, I’ve always loved writing even as a kid. So, I remember during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, I started writing for a blog and in the process of conducting research for content ideas, I stumbled on the word ‘copywriting’. At first I was mistaking it for ‘copyright’ and so I didn’t put much thought to it. It was until a friend of mine sent me a link to a copywriting course because he knew I was a writer, that was when I paid a little more attention to it. So, I stormed Google and read every single thing I could find explaining what copywriting is and instantly I fell in love with it especially because I love writing and I love business (marketing) and I’d say copywriting is easily the combination of both.

Q3. What forms of copy do you write?

I write mostly emails, web copy, advertorials (ad copy) and blog content.

Q4. What are your favorite niches to write in?

Based on the niches I’ve written copy in the past, some of my favourite are Information Marketing, FinTech and Personal Development. And because I love to explore, I’m hopeful that in the course of my career, I’d discover some more niches I love.

Q5. What is the #1 lesson you've learned as a copywriter?

Honestly, there’s a lot of lessons I’ve learned in my 2+ years as a Copywriter. Can I really say what the #1 is? Hmm, okay I’ll try.

One huge lesson I’ve learned which I think every newbie should keep at the back of their minds always, is this..

‘Focus on becoming good at the skill and everything would fall into place’

Young people these days when they learn a skill are too eager to start making money off it that they tend to settle for mediocrity because they’re too focused on chasing the dough, they want quick money especially in the part of the world I come from. I was guilty of that at the start of my career so I can totally relate.
So, I’d say to copywriters reading this, stop thinking short term and start thinking long term. Just commit to becoming better at the craft daily and you’d be amazed at the speed of your growth and results.

Q6. Who is your favorite copywriter & why?

I don’t have one favourite and think I’ll have to segment my answer to this question:

1. For legendary, David Ogilvy and Gary Halbert.
2. For foreign copywriters alive and kicking, Ning Li, Daniel Throssell and Justin Oberman.
3. For Nigerian copywriters alive and kicking too, Andy Mukolo and Golibe Ilechukwu.

I love them because they’re not just skin in the game but I love how they write copy (so naturally that it doesn’t read like an Ad), I’ve also learned a lot from them and I’m still learning from them.
They’re all male because we’re in an industry dominated by the male figure but two female copywriters I’d love to give a shout out to who are also my fav and inspire me a lot are Vikki Ross (foreign) and Rachel Augustine (Nigerian).

Q7. Do you have any recent wins to share?

My most recent win is relaunching my community, AdHub Africa. It’s a community for young Africans in the marketing and communications industry, the goal of the community is to provide learning, jobs, career advancement and other opportunities (both local and international) to members of the community. It’s all about helping one another climb the ladder of their career, I’ve seen many copywriters and marketing enthusiasts fall off the radar because they don’t have access to things like these.

Q8. What would you say to a prospective client who wants to hire you?

You’ve invested so much in your business to settle for just sales, your business needs more than that!

Think soda, coca-cola comes to mind.

Think movie streaming, Netflix comes to mind.

And many more…

The bottomline is, as a Brand Response Copywriter, I not just help you get the sale with words that pierce through your prospects hearts but I wrote words that build your brand awareness, build brand loyalty and put you at the top of your prospects’ minds.

Q9. What is a good email address for prospective clients to contact you?

thepreciousgreg@gmail.com
