Q1. Where are you from?

Bournemouth UK

Q2. How did you discover copywriting?

I started my own Architecture business in 2012, and soon realised that as well as designing buildings my clients couldn’t afford to build, I had to do this whole mass of other stuff. Like marketing. I couldn’t really afford to pay someone to do it for me, so I got stuck in and had a go myself. I enjoyed it, and clients started saying stuff like “I got in touch because the blog you wrote about XYZ made me laugh/was useful etc.” Over the next couple of years I realised that enjoyed writing more than designing people’s extensions, so I started reading books and doing courses, eventually transitioning from Architect to Copywriter.

Q3. What forms of copy do you write?

Email, Sales Letters & VSLs primarily. Anything direct response with an edge.

Q4. What are your favorite niches to write in?

Health & Fitness and Personal Development on the day to day. But my favourite ever project was for a company that sold chocolate vaginas. Yes, really.

Q5. What is the #1 lesson you've learned as a copywriter?

If you can put yourself (or your client) in a category of one, thats the majority of the job done.

Q6. Who is your favorite copywriter & why?

Mike Samuels. His non flakey dedication to being solid and good is refreshing and inspiring.

Q7. Do you have any recent wins to share?

I recently beat the control for one of the UK’s top nutritionists by taking conversions from 4% to 7.5% In hindsight I definitely should have asked for an equity deal on that!

Q8. What would you say to a prospective client who wants to hire you?

You will, without doubt, find a technically “better” copywriter than me. But, have they written a sales page that did a billion dollars in sales on a $7 product in a week? No, me neither. But I have been told by over three people that “You’re pretty good with words and stuff”. So there’s that.

Q9. What is a good email address for prospective clients to contact you?

zak@copybyzak.com
